Three pupils have been named overall winners at the Pride in Medway Awards after they helped an 81-year-old man.

Harry James, Nathan Pennock and Owen Edwards were nominated by Russell Kimble, whose father Richard had fallen ill while shopping in Rainham High Street in January last year.

The three young Samaritans from The Howard School rushed to Richard’s aid, ensuring he had water and was steady on his feet.

They then carried his shopping and walked him safely home.

His son used social media to discover their identity, resulting in his dad being able to thank the boys later in person and present them with a reward.

In his nomination, Russell said the young heroes – then aged 17 – had provided one of the last acts of kindness their dad would remember.

Richard died a few weeks later. His family paid tribute, describing him as “the most gentle, lovely soul you could ever meet”.

Harry, Nathan and Owen were among 38 finalists selected from 118 nominations invited to this year’s Pride in Medway gala held last Friday (April 19) at MidKent College, Gillingham.

The event is an annual celebration of the good deeds, bravery and community spirit of the people across the Towns.

Now in its 22nd year, the awards are presented in nine categories, as well as an overall winner.

It is run by Kent communications agency, Pillory Barn.

“I was honoured to be part of the judging panel for the first time and was touched to hear so many incredible stories, which made it a difficult job to choose the winners.”
