Resignation calls as MP arrest row escalates

Bob Marshall-Andrews has become the first Labour MP to publicly call on the Commons Speaker to resign over the Damian Green row.

The Medway constituency MP says because he knew about the raid on Mr Green’s Commons office, in which police had no warrant, he could have stopped it.

Mr Marshall-Andrews said: “The speaker says he knew, he was told by the Serjeant at Arms. At that point it becomes squarely his responsibility, He knew what was happening, he could have taken action to stop it.”

He believed Michael Martin was guilty of a “deplorable breach of duty.”

Mr Marshall Andrews’ calls comes after the Metropolitan Police probing alleged Home Office leads arrested Ashford Tory MP Mr Green, on November 27, and searched his Westminster office.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme Mr Marshall-Andrews said: “He is a rather better speaker than most people give him credit for, but what happened with this raid, which he knew about and which he effectively allowed, was a deplorable breach of duty. I frankly don’t think he can continue.”

He went on: “If we go on into the trenches in order to try to defend this then it would be seen as part of a lamentable history on civil liberties issues and it would do us terrible damage at this stage.”
