Parents and teachers have been asked to remember the importance of hygiene in the face of the swine flu pandemic as pupils return from the summer holidays.
NHS Medway has issued the advice as experts warn a larger second wave of the flu could return in the coming months.
Sue Whiting, lead of school nursing, urged parents and schools to follow simple measures to reduce the transmission of swine flu in the school community, said: “Practice good hygiene – cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw it away as soon as possible afterwards.
“Remember also to wash your hands regularly, particularly after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.”
NHS Medway’s director of public health, Dr Alison Barnett said: “If children develop flu-like symptoms, it is important that parents keep them away from school until they are well.
“Equally, if you work at a school and develop flu-like symptoms, you should also remain at home until your symptoms get better.”
Parents who suspect that their child may have swine flu are advised to contact the National Pandemic Flu Service (NPFS 0800 1 513 100).
