Plans for homes on former Avenue Tennis site between Second Avenue and Glebe Road in Gillingham

A long-running plan to build homes on a former tennis club is due to be discussed once again next week.

Last year, a planning inspector allowed permission to build six homes on the former Avenue Tennis site between Second Avenue and Glebe Road in Gillingham.

Medway Council refused the plans four times before planning inspector Dan Szymanski conducted an appeal hearing and site visit in April last year.

Residents previously took to the streets to protest the proposals, saying how they thought the area would become overdeveloped if the plans went ahead.

A revised application for eight homes on the land – which is not accessible to the public – will be considered at a meeting of the authority's planning committee next week.

The plans - which were submitted in December – include two detached three-bedroom homes, two semi-detached three-bedroom homes, three detached four-bedroom homes, one bungalow with two bedrooms and 11 parking spaces.

A report presented to councillors ahead of the meeting says the side extensions on 26 and 28 Second Avenue have been demolished in order to increase the width of the access road onto the site, which is currently a locked gate.

It also says 30 letters of objection have been handed in, raising a number of concerns including over development, and loss of trees and open space, and sunlight.

Planning officers have recommended approval for the plans.
