As such, police were called to the area to undertake a search. A person was later taken into custody.

The incident has caused delays to passengers.

A spokesman for Southeastern said: “If you are traveling on our routes via the Medway Towns, please delay your journey until later today if you can.

“If you are traveling now, expect long delays as the line is blocked and there are very heavy traffic delays in the area affecting road transport.”

Passengers already on board are being asked to stay on the train and water will be delivered to them when they get to Sittingbourne and Gillingham.

The company says services will be on the move shortly.
