Motorists are being advised to check their vehicles after a number of catalytic converters were stolen across Kent.

Since January 1 there has been 10 reports of thefts – one of them in Twydall Lane, Gillingham from a Mercedes Benz Sprinter between 6pm on January 5 and 6am on January 7.

Catalytic converters are being targeted because of the high value of the precious metals they contain.

They convert the products of combustion in the exhaust into less toxic substances.

Vans and four-wheel drives are most at risk from catalytic converter theft.
The 10 reports have all involved a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van.

Kent Police Ch Supt Steve Corbishley (pictured) said: “We work closely with scrap metal dealers to make it easier to trace sellers of stolen metal and remove those dealers who operate illegally.”

Motorists can take a number of steps to prevent themselves becoming a victim:

- Keep your vehicle in a garage whenever possible, or park in busy, well-lit areas.

- Look out for people working under cars who are acting suspiciously.

- Fit a catalytic converter clamp or security cage to protect your catalytic converter.

- Security mark and register the metal shell of the converter so if it stolen and recovered, it will be easier to trace it back to your vehicle.
