A young woman fell from the M2 bridge last night (Monday).

Police, fire fighters, paramedics and coastguards were on the scene by about 7.30pm.

The woman, aged 26, is believed to be from Northfleet.

She landed in mud below the bridge between Cuxton and Chatham about 50 metres from the shore.

Off duty coastguard Jon Cole, who lives nearby, and coastguards John Lovage and Clive Tillotson were first on the scene having used the work boat stationed at Medway Bridge Marina, to reach her.

They held her head above water while waiting for the mud rescue team from Strood.

She was brought to shore and taken to hospital.

She was drifting in and out of consciousness.

Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Emergency services left the scene by about 9.15pm.
