Work begins to repair historic Sun Pier in Chatham

Work to repair Sun Pier in Chatham started on Monday.

The work, which involves installing floating pontoons and ramp-ways, was postponed last month because of bad weather.

The operation is expected to take at least two days. The fixtures were due to be towed to the town centre pier by barge from Chatham Docks where they were being stored.

Two pontoons were being installed to create a landing and were secured in position after high water. Two pedestrian walkways are due to be installed today.

The pier, which in its heyday was used by paddle steamer day trippers along the coast, has been ravaged by a fire and storms.

Medway Council has secured a loan to pay for the work which will enable it to be once again used a mooring place for leisure craft and possibly, water taxis.

It is hoped it will be up and running by the end of November and will return Sun Pier to the status of the only publicly-owned usable landing place on the river.
