Gillingham's management are keen to see as much football as they can as they look to rebuild in the summer

Gillingham’s season ends on Saturday but the manager won’t be clocking off.

Neil Harris has a squad to build for 2022/23, whether that’s in League 1 or League 2, and the search for new recruits is already well under way.

Only a handful of Gillingham players are contracted beyond this season and there will be a rebuild job to be done in the summer.

Harris and his coaching team were out scouting last night (Tuesday) around the grounds.

“We are out looking at players and all levels,” said Harris. “League 1, 2 and Conference, we are splitting ourselves and that will be the case for the coming weeks as well, once Saturday is out of the way.

“Whatever Saturday brings we will be out on Monday, there is a full fixture list in the National League and we will be out again and then we will be out the following weeks because there are National League, League 2 and some under-23 fixtures still to be played.

“Our full focus is on Saturday, and preparation for that, but in the meantime me and the staff can manage our time to make sure we look at the bigger picture as well.

“Monday morning won’t be holiday time for me, I am sure I will squeeze one in somewhere, I will have to, to keep my wife and children happy!

“But we talk about the bigger project and I am here for the long haul. The bigger picture becomes recruitment in the summer and stability for the football club.

“A lot of conversations will be had next week, with the players and the staff, and the chairman predominantly, in preparation for the challenge of next season, whatever awaits.”
