More: Gillingham’s unexpected goal hero

Gillingham, under Neil Harris, made it to round four last season, losing 2-0 to Wolves having knocked out Premier League Brentford in the previous round on penalties.

Top-flight teams who aren’t competing in Europe enter at the Second-Round stage, meaning 12 Premier League teams will join the 36 EFL sides who have made it past the opening stage.

The Premier League sides excluded from the Second Round are Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Brighton, West Ham and Aston Villa. Those sides will all enter at the Third-Round stage.

Chelsea and Tottenham are the big names in the hat for the next round. Crystal Palace, Brentford and Fulham will also be potential opponents for the Gills. Ball numbers have yet to be confirmed.

Supporters will hope they can avoid away games against the likes of Exeter and Plymouth.

The draw remains regionalised in round two and takes place today (Wednesday) after the evening match between Burton Albion and Leicester City, which is live on Sky Sports.

Gillingham won at home against Exeter City in last year’s Second Round of the League Cup after beating Wimbledon in round one.

Second-Round games are expected to take place the week commencing August 28.
