Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh hoping for new signings before the season kicks off at Southend

Gillingham suffered a transfer knockback ahead of the weekend but boss Justin Edinburgh won’t stop looking.

He’s in the market for a couple of defenders and a striker, possibly two

if Luke Norris departs.we have lost Lee (Martin) now, most likely for the season, so that’s another body down. We know what we need.”

But with just a week to go before the season opener against Southend ,the boss insists he won’t be panicking.

Edinburgh said: “We are moving. We thought we had got one across the line but unfortunately it didn’t happen. We are working hard.

“The (transfer) window doesn’t shut tomorrow or next Saturday, not until the end of August.

“We won’t panic and we will continue to work to bring in what we consider to be the right type of player to this club and hopefully that will be Monday (or) Tuesday, but we certainly know we need reinforcements.”

If those additions aren’t in place before the trip to Southend, Edinburgh is confident he has a squad capable of dealing with the challenge of League 1.

He said: “I do believes we have the squad to cope and if it wasn’t to be then I think we have enough.
