Jake Hessenthaler's goal against Doncaster Rovers took Gillingham top of League 1

Injury-hit Gillingham roared back to the top of League 1 on Saturday to give manager Justin Edinburgh plenty of encouragement.

Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Doncaster meant Gills started September in the same way they began August – three points and a clean sheet at Priestfield.

“It feels very good to be top,” said Edinburgh, whose side are the only team in the division still unbeaten.

“We have tasted it once or twice this season and we’re back there after winning our third successive home game.

“It was a fantastic team performance, in terms of the disruption we suffered prior to the game, losing three of our normal back four. But credit to the players for overcoming it.

“There is a good spirit in the group, a real togetherness and a buzz, from top to bottom, from the chairman, the office staff, cleaners, groundsman, everyone. There is a real good family air about the club.

“Can we continue? I said to the players on Friday in the team meeting that August had been brilliant and could we replicate that in September? We have got off to the perfect start.

“That is three consecutive clean sheets at home and so far, so good.

"The start we have made can’t be underestimated. We brought nine new footballers to the club. For them to have bedded in, with a cohesion and togetherness as quickly as they have, that’s testament to the players.

"I have great belief that they can continue that.”
