Gillingham face an anxious wait to find out the severity of injuries to two of their players.
Max Ehmer and Bradley Dack both went off injured on Tuesday night in the League Cup game at Southend.
Ehmer was knocked out just 11 minutes into the game and ended up in hospital while Dack lasted less than half an hour before jarring his knee.
Those set-backs failed to deter the Gills on the night as they won 3-1.
Boss Justin Edinburgh is confident both players could be back sooner rather than later.
Speaking after the game, Edinburgh said: “When Max fell he found it very hard to get his breath and that was the big thing.
“Obviously there was a blow to the head so we are awaiting news of some cautionary scans to make sure everything is alright there.
“Bradley came down on his knee and jarred the front of it. On a first look we are hoping it’s going to be okay. I don’t think there is any structural damage, but we will get that scanned and assess it. We are hoping that there is no serious damage.”
The Gills went into the season having already lost Aaron Morris (knee) and Lee Martin (ankle) both of whom could be out for a year.
Bradley Garmston is still some way off returning following a dislocated knee cap.
Gillingham have still managed to win their opening two games 3-1, both at Southend.
“It’s been quite horrendous really,” said the manager.
“But it is a testament to the squad. It is being tested but at the moment it has enough quality to be able to deal with it.”
