Chelsea youngster Jordan Houghton confirms return to Stamford Bridge and thanks Gillingham for first Football League experience

Chelsea youngster Jordan Houghton confirmed his Gills exit after Saturday’s game against Bradford.

The midfielder’s loan deal expired at the weekend and boss Justin Edinburgh admitted last week it was unlikely to be extended.

Houghton didn’t feature in any of Gillingham’s last 10 games and didn’t make the last three matchday squads but he leaves with Football League experience under his belt.

He said: “It was my first experience of the Football League and in the main an enjoyable one.

“It was a shame how it ended and not exactly how I’d have planned, but I’ve learned a lot and am pleased with all of the 15 games I got and would like to think I’ve played a big part in what could be a special season for Gillingham.

“Thanks to the club and its staff for giving me the opportunity, the fans and most importantly the players, who made me feel part of the team from day one and I’m sure they will go on and do great things at Gillingham or wherever their future careers take them.”

Houghton was a regular early on in the season, starting the first eight games of the campaign. His last appearance was in Gillingham’s 3-0 FA Cup defeat at League 2 Stevenage two months ago.
