Gillingham boss Steve Lovell happy with seven points from four games despite late slip up at Fleetwood Town

Gillingham moved another point closer to safety on Saturday but were left to reflect on what might have been.

Fleetwood snatched a draw in stoppage time, denying the Gills another victory which would have seen them climb to 13th in League 1.

Gillingham boss Steve Lovell was at least happy to have left with something against a top-10 side in dreadful weather conditions.

He said: “It was a good point at the end of the day because it was a horrible game and one where it was so easy to come away with nothing.

“The ball was going all over the place, we tried to play football and we were getting in their final third but it was just going out of play all the time. I don’t think I’ve been in many games where the wind has been as bad as that.

“A point is a point and we take that going into those two important games next week.”

The Gills welcome 19th-placed Oxford to Priestfield on Saturday before the midweek visit of Bristol Rovers, another team battling against the drop.

Both Rovers and Oxford won at the weekend, moving them closer to the Gills.

Lovell noted: “Those two points would have been lovely and taken us onto 42 points. It is the points that count, it doesn’t matter where you are in the league, we could win next week and go to 12th.

“If anyone would have said we would take seven points from the last four games we would have taken that.

“We are on a decent run, the boys are performing well and even in those conditions we played some good stuff and we defended as a unit.

“It was another game where we have picked up a point and there are two big games coming up at home now.

“We were gutted (on Saturday), as if we have lost, but there are still a lot of plusses from the performance and we will take that forward into next week which is a very big game against Oxford.

“The last few games we have put on good performances and deserved to have got the points. There is a long way to go, 11 games and everything to play for.”
