Gillingham chairman Paul Scally says squad have stomach for battle

Nothing is out of the question this season, insists Gillingham chairman Paul Scally.

Money might be tight, with the club embroiled in a legal challenge with their former caterers, but he’s happy with the team that’s been assembled.

Mr Scally said: “The spirit in the dressing room is probably the best it has been in a good number of years.

“Those that have watched some of the pre-season games have probably seen a different Gillingham side to that they have seen over the past few years.

“We have got a team we can go to battle with and players who will be on the bench who would normally have been in the first team starting line-up. That is a good sign.

“Nothing is out of the question. We are as good as anyone else in this division, if not better than some and we want to make sure we are better than most. If we are better than most then we will be up there or thereabouts.

“One of the problems last year was that our recruitment was poor and I will be the first to hold my hands up. I sanctioned deals but I get led. Some of the signings we made weren’t good enough and we have learned from it.

“I brought in Peter Taylor (as director of football) and we have another set of eyes now.”
