Gillingham skipper Josh Wright says the pain of last season will help to push the team on even more

The way Gillingham ended their previous campaign will drive them on this season, says new skipper Josh Wright.

Gillingham fell away from promotion contention in the closing stages of the 2015-16 season, having led the division several times and been in the thick of the chase for honours for the majority of the year.

A ninth place finish and without a win in their last eight League 1 games left many disappointed.

None more so than 26-year-old Wright, who this season will wear the captain’s armband.

He said: “A lot of people will remember the way last season ended.

“That is the thing that maybe pains us and frustrates us and something that will make us dig in even more this year, to rectify it and push on even more.

“We finished ninth and a lot of people at the start of the season maybe thought that would have been an over-achievement but it looked the opposite way round because of where we were all season.”

Wright described himself as being “delighted, proud, privileged and excited” to be the new club captain and it’s a responsibility he has always craved.

He said: “It is something I wanted to become as a young boy and it’s a day I will always remember (after boss Justin Edinburgh handed him the role). It comes with a responsibility and I believe that is something I can thrive off."
