A QUIZ night staged by the Kent Messenger Group in Canterbury broke all records when £10,000 was raised for charity.

The KM Big Quiz was held at the city's Body and Mind Sports Centre and attracted a record 77 teams of eight people to take part. This smashed last year's record of 63 teams of eight and the 2007 total of £6,400 raised for charity.

South Kent pub team Bonny Cravat from Woodchurch, Ashford, retained their Canterbury KM Big Quiz crown after beating the Moomins by two points.

Proceeds from the event are to be divided between four causes: the League of Friends at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital; the Lady Mayoress of Canterbury's Charity Appeal, the children's road safety charity Kent and Medway Walking Bus Group and Pilgrims Hospices in East Kent, which is the Kent Messenger Group's nominated cause in East Kent for 2007.

Key partner Shepherd Neame raised £2,000 of the total through its Spitfire Charity Bar. Louise Hopkins from Shepherd Neame was presented with a bouquet by Lady Mayoress of Canterbury Barbara Todd to thank Louise for her hard work and support.

Bouquets were also presented to Jean Byers of the League of Friends, who led a team organising food for the night, and Nicci Mattin of Canterbury High School, who was chief scorer.

Quiz master Simon Dolby of the KM Group announced to guests that £9,625 had been raised on the night, prompting Keith Jarrett of Canterbury-based Coombs Construction to donate £375 to help the event reach the £10,000 mark.

Four KM Big Quiz events are held each year around the county with the Maidstone heat next on the schedule. This will take place at 7pm on Friday, June 15 at Maidstone Leisure Centre. A table for eight people costs £50 and can be booked now through the children's road safety website www.kentwalkingbus.org

The Medway KM Big Quiz takes place in October and the Ashford event in November. The top two teams from each heat go through to the county final which will take place in December at the Shepherd Neame Brewery, Faversham.

Sponsors are needed for all the events with packages starting from just £100. For details call Simon Dolby on 07989 164 752 or e-mail sdolby@thekmgroup.co.uk
