A blustery cross-wind decided the winners in the Dover Paper Boat Race on Saturday.

Organised by the London Road Community Forum and sponsored by the Dover Mercury, the races attracted more than 100 competitors and raised £197 for the Pilgrims Hospice.

While many of the boats were traditional designs, made from newspaper, others were obviously the result of a great deal of hard work and preparation.

But at the end of the day it was all down to the conditions - including a blustery cross-wind - which decided the winners.

River Dour stalwart Ian Lillford, who was in the water to make sure that none of the boats became trapped, reported that the water was quite fast flowing, although winning times varied from one minute 16 seconds to one minute 53 seconds.

Some of the boats looked very majestic, complete with sails, as they made their way down the river.

Others tipped over onto their side, after being dropped from the Pencester Road bridge, and completed the whole journey that way.

Cllr Roger Walkden was the overall adult winner, while in the children’s section, Harbour School pupil Reece Chamberlain was the overall winner.
