A KENT town dug deep this Christmas to make sure local needy children received at least one present.

Maidstone & District Neighbourhood Watch Association experienced their most successful Christmas Toy appeal yet last month, with more presents than ever being donated this year for families in the county town.

The gifts were presented today at the Meadow Children's Centre in Parkwood. Some were given straight to the nursery children, while others will be distributed to low-income families across the area.

Mandy Humphrey, the appeal co-ordinator, said: ‘We are really overwhelmed with the kindness of the people of Maidstone that has made this year’s appeal the best ever.

“It’s such a delight to see the joy these gifts bring to the children who receive them, and it helps take some of the pressure off families over the festive season.

She added: “I would like to thank all those that made donations, but in particular Build a Bear, Wilkinsons, Tesco and Maidstone Police who all gave generously.

“My thanks also go to the Maidstone Town Hall Staff who acted as a collection point for this years’ appeal.

“These presents will make such a difference, making it a brighter Christmas for many children in Maidstone.’
