THE training has come to an end, the sponsorship should be in place, and now all the thousands of women taking place in the Race for Life event in Maidstone this weekend have to worry about is making it around the 5km course.

The women-only event in aid of Cancer Research UK takes place in Mote Park tomorrow, one of two Race for Life events planned in the County Town this summer.

The two races will attract 8,000 women and should make £590,000 to fund research into women’s cancers.

Maidstone race organiser, Natasha Etienne, said: “Sunday’s race officially closed on Wednesday and the race later this year is already closed, proving how popular Race for Life events still are in this area.

“The course is all ready and now we’re just hoping that people will do sundances to make sure we get good weather.”

Sunday’s will attract 3,500 participants who can walk, jog, or sprint around the parkland course.

It is expected to make £350,000 in sponsorship.

Miss Etienne said organising two races a year instead of the original one had been a great idea.

“There has been the demand for it,” she said.

“The town has shown so much support and there are still more runners than places, which is brilliant.”

Tomorrow's event starts at 11am, with a warm-up beginning at 10.45am.

The June race also takes place in Mote Park at 11am on Sunday, June 8.

Another race takes place at the Hop Farm Country Park in Paddock Wood on Wednesday, May 21 at 7pm. The race is still open.
