Bus firm criticised after axing hospital service

Bus bosses could be leaving elderly people stranded with plans to axe a Medway service.

The 120 and 121 routes serve the Wakeley Road and Otterham Key Lane areas of Rainham.

But both will stop running next month after a slump in passenger numbers.

Operator Nu-Venture says the routes are no longer financially viable.

The company has given Medway Council and Kent traffic commisioners notice that they will cease running the services from Friday, August 8.

Nu-Venture boss Norman Kemp, said: “We cannot run a commercial bus service with so few passengers using it,“

“I’m afraid it is question of use it or lose it - yes bums on seats - and I am very disappointed with the poor passenger response on this route.”

Critics have slammed the decision Alan Connor of High Dewar Road, Rainham, said: “It’s a nonsense to say few passengers use these buses - they are often packed. This area is full of elderly people who rely on the bus - this development is an absolute nightmare for them all.”

A Medway Council spokesman said: “The council is exploring whether or not a replacement for these Rainham services can be provided and will announce details of the outcome shortly."
