One of the biggest ships ever to arrive in the UK docked in Medway today.

The Al Khuwair super tanker has come to Grain with enough liquid natural gas (LNG) on board to heat millions of homes for a week.

As ships go, they don't get much bigger than the Al Khuwair.

At 135,848 gt (gross tons), it is eight times the size of the biggest ship to be built at Chatham's former naval dockyard and one of the biggest in the world.

It has brought 50 million therms of LNG - the biggest delivery Britain has ever received - enough for 4.5 million homes for a week, or more than a third of Britain for a whole day.

The super-cooled LNG will be pumped into containers on the opposite side of the road from the London Thamesport complex, as part of Centrica's second phase of developing the gas terminal at Grain.

The £800m project involves the installation of three gas holders, each the size of the Albert Hall.

The three phase project, which will be completed within two years, will mean 20 per cent of the UK?s gas supplies are stored in Grain.

The chief executive officer for Centrica, Sam Laidlaw, said: "Our capacity at Isle of Grain is just one of many strategic investments Centrica is making in new gas and power assets to secure the UK?s future energy needs."
