It now includes an open-plan dining area, a refill station so people can top up their own drinks and a special parent and baby area where customers can heat up food and bottles.

In order to "accommodate for everyone young or old" customers will be given the option of either ordering food via new kiosk ordering stations, or they can go to the counter as normal.

They can also order using their phone by scanning the QR code on the menus.

All the food is made to order, and the garden centre has also unveiled a new vegetarian and vegan menu, as well a ‘Smokery’ special of pulled pork or beef, which is smoked on-site for 12 hours before being served.

The restaurant continues the ‘Novell’ family name after father and son Jim and David Novell, now 74, who founded Polhill in 1964.

It is now managed by David’s wife Allison, who took over in 1986 and it remains a family-run business with sons Mark, 47, and Josh, 25, and daughter Rebecca, 30, all being directors.

The garden centre became the first in Kent to open a new BBQ showroom with a live demo cooking area last summer.

Within the last year, it has also brought out the Polhill Plus App to make it easier for customers to shop online.

Jenni Seddon, marketing manager at the garden centre, said: “We’re always looking at innovative ways to make Polhill even more inviting for our customers.

"We want to accommodate for everyone – young and old – and modernise the shopping experience while sticking to our traditional family values and heritage which has made Polhill what it is today."
