A day care centre for elderly people at the eastern end of Sheppey has reopened after a temporary closure.

Age UK’s base at Roxeth in Leysdown was shut in March due to staff shortages and because it was running at a loss.

It has now restarted and two open days were held to launch the service last Monday and Tuesday.

The building in Mustards Road will be day care on Thursdays and Fridays and free trips to Tesco will be run, picking up users on a Wednesday.

On Wednesday there will also be return transport offered for residents at the eastern end to take them for day care at the centre in Trinity Road, Sheerness.

At the open days there were talks about the services which will be offered and clients had the chance to meet the team.

Chairman of the charity’s Sheppey branch Alan Doucy said he doesn’t want people to feel like there’s a sword hanging over the service and that it’s a long-term project.

He also said they will try and tailor services offered from Roxeth to what clients would like if possible.

“It’s been successful and there was a good turn out so it’s pleasing,” he said.

“It’s a different approach but there are lots of ideas for Roxeth now.”
