Murder investigation after inmate found dead at Swaleside prison in Eastchurch

Two men have been charged with murder after an inmate was found dead in his cell at a Kent prison.

Police were called to HMP Swaleside in Brabazon Road, Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey at 7pm on Wednesday.

It is believed the prisoner, who was in his 40s, suffered multiple stab wounds.

Jason George Gomez, 44, and Paul Wadkin, 32, were remanded in custody and appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court today via videolink.

Swaleside is a category B jail and is a main centre prison for inmates in the first stage of their life sentence.

It also accepts criminals who are in the second stage of their life sentence, are serving four years or more or have at least 18 months left to serve.

A source inside the prison, who didn't want to be named, said: "There was a death on H wing, it is the wing with inmates with personality disorders and the like.

"The death is being treated as murder and some staff didn't leave the site until after midnight last night."

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "A HMP Swaleside prisoner was treated by staff and paramedics on the evening of Wednesday, March 25.

"He was pronounced dead at around 7pm. Next of kin have been informed.

"The matter is being investigated by Kent Police."
