A seaside resort's paddling pool for children has finally reopened.

As Britain reached its hottest ever day on record, it was announced Sheerness paddling pool was reopen – just in time for the summer holidays.

In June, a national chlorine shortage shut the pool then, earlier this month, Swale council announced on social media it had sourced supplies of the gas to keep the water clean but said the pool would stay shut because there was no power.

At the time, Cllr Oliver Eakin (Con) said: "The chlorine required has now been delivered. However, another issue has occurred.

"There is a fault with the electricity supply and Npower is required to come out and fix the fault. Npower has no estimated time of arrival or when they expect to complete the work."

He said the council would continue to chase the power company and added: "Maintenance is ongoing. Once the electricity supply is restored it should be very quick to get the pool back into use."

However today, a week after Islanders were left without water after a main burst, Sheppey Leisure Complex announced the pool was finally open to the public.

It said: “Following the challenges of a chlorine shortage, loss of power and loss of water, we are happy to confirm that the paddling pool is now open 10am-5pm, seven days a week for the summer season.”

The complex confirmed that no membership was required as the paddling pool is free for public use. No booking is required either.

The pool is part of the Sheppey Leisure Centre and is run by Swale Community Leisure on behalf of Swale council.
