The speed limit past a school where parents and councillors have been fighting for increased road safety measures is to be lowered.

Kent County Council (KCC) has published an official order to extend the 30mph restriction in Leysdown Road to include the stretch outside Eastchurch primary’s St Clement’s site, which is currently 40mph.

Next month, the school would have been open a year and campaigners say the new limit marks a breakthrough but warn there is still work to do.

Warden and Leysdown representative on Swale council, Cllr Pat Sandle, said: “It’s a start. The 30mph limit will help.

“That’s the first stage but what we are still trying to get are the flashing lights for 20mph which can go on for an hour in the morning and half an hour in the afternoon.

“They’re doing it all over Kent.”

Anyone who wants to comment on the change to 30mph should send an email to tro@kent.gov.uk or write to Amanda Murdoch, Ashford Highways Depot, Javelin Way, Henwood Indistrial Estate, Ashford, TN24 8AD.

All comments must quote “amendment no.2 consolidation order 2012” and need to be in by Monday, October 22.
