The Heritage micropub in Sheppey has launched an ale to raise cash for the Sheerness Dockyard Church appeal.

Beer lovers will be able to raise a glass to the Island’s heritage as a percentage from the sale of a new ale will go towards the restoration of a landmark.

The Heritage micropub in Halfway has teamed up with the Spitalfield Trust and Mad Cat Brewery to create a drink to help raise funds for the Sheerness Dockyard Church appeal.

The Grade II* listed building was damaged in a fire caused by a spark from a bonfire in 2001.

An estimated £4 million is needed to realise a project to convert the site into a community facility and business units. It is hoped most of the money will be made available from grants.

Peter Meaney, owner of the Brogdale-based brewery, Will Palin and fellow trustees will be attending the launch of the beverage, called the Heritage Dockyard Church Ale, at the Minster Road micropub on Saturday at 7.30pm.

A donation of 30p from every £3.20 pint will be go to the restoration project. The ale itself is going to be a 4% amber bitter.

Melvin Hopper, who co-owns the pub with his wife, Margaret, said: “I met Will at the last Dockyard Church restoration fund day and I sounded him out about talking to local brewers and getting a bespoke ale made.

“I don’t think we make enough mention of the Island’s history.”

A label is being created for the special brew.
