An eight-year-old boy raised the alarm when he found two dogs abandoned in a house in appalling conditions.

The animals were taken into the care of the RSPCA after they were discovered by the youngster at a house near Ypres Drive in Kemsley.

He alerted an adult and officers were called out just after 4.50pm on Saturday.

After gaining access to the house, it is understood the officers discovered a brown canine, possibly a Staffordshire bull terrier, and a white mutt, believed to be a terrier breed, inside the kitchen.

It is thought they may have been inside the room for up to three weeks after the owner left the premises.

Charlotte Green, who was visiting family at the time, claimed the animals had no food or water and the floor was covered in faeces and urine.

The 28-year-old, who lives in London, said: “They looked emaciated. The little white one had cuts on its head. I don’t know how he got the injuries.

“It’s disgusting. I wouldn’t do that to my own worst enemy.”

Another witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I was walking towards the flat when a little boy said, ‘I need help. The lady has gone away and left her dogs’.

“The back gate was unlocked, and when I walked round there was an older lady on the phone.

“A man tried to undo the bottom front room window after a little girl opened the top one. We tried calling them but they couldn’t get out as the door was shut.

“The kitchen was smothered in dog poo and wee.”

A RSPCA spokesman said: “Two dogs are in the care of the RSPCA. They’ve been seen by a vet and are doing OK. We hope to re-home them.”
