Burglar Daniel Beaney from Bapchild, jailed for trying to sell dog stolen from Rodmersham

A brazen burglar who posted a picture of a stolen dog on Facebook has been jailed.

Thief Daniel Beaney snatched a Jack Russell named Pongo from a building at a farm in Church Road, Rodmersham in February.

The 24-year-old initially visited the home to ask a man living there if he could borrow a lighter.

He went to get one from his kitchen - where he kept Pongo - but then became suspicious of Beaney and walked him off the property.

The victim then got on with some farm work outside his home, but when he returned, he found the dog was missing.

A Facebook appeal to find missing Pongo led to the victim being told Beaney was advertising his dog for sale on the same website for £70.

A friend of Pongo's owner then arranged to meet Beaney and hand over £40 in exchange for the dog outside a supermarket in Murston Road, Sittingbourne.

Beaney was later arrested and the dog was returned to its owner on the same day it went missing.

Beaney, of Fox Hill in Bapchild, admitted burglary at Maidstone Crown Court and was jailed for a year and seven months.

PC Danny James said: "Beaney's crime was very opportunistic and I'm glad we managed to return the dog to the victim very quickly.

"In interview Beaney said that when he found the dog he believed it to be a stray and admits he received a £40 payment when he gave the dog back. He showed little remorse.

"This quick turnaround and the prison sentence shows we take all reports of burglary seriously and will use all the resources at our disposal to keep offenders off our streets."
