Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital nurse Vijay Bundhun accused of rape and molesting women

A community mental health nurse allegedly raped and molested women during the course of his job.

Vijay Bundhun is said to have carried out attacks after insisting on giving some of his victims massages.

Six women have come forward to make complaints against him, including a 15-year-old.

The 42-year-old faces four charges of rape, eight of sexual assault and one of a serious sexual assault at various locations.

As part of the mental health team at the hospital, his duties included seeing patients in their homes – where he allegedly carried out some of the attacks.

But Bundhun, of Tonford Lane, Canterbury, denies all the charges.

Prosecutor Deborah Charles said the six alleged victims were unconnected and had independently complained to police.

She told a jury at Maidstone Crown Court an inquiry was launched after one woman complained last year that she had been touched inappropriately by Bundhun.

Another patient then came forward reporting rape and a series of sexual assaults by him during home visits.

A 15-year-old Italian on an exchange visit also complained she had been inappropriately touched.

Miss Charles said: “None of the first three complainants was known to any of the others but all were making similar complaints.

“While the trial was in progress, three further complainants contacted the police as a result of reading about the case in the local newspaper.”

One woman who came forward had been studying to be a nurse.

She complained that Bundhun touched her sexually and asked for a massage.

Another woman said during a hospital appointment he rubbed her arm, embraced her and nuzzled her neck.

Miss Charles told the jury: “You may think she is not simply jumping on the bandwagon.

“She makes a relatively low-level allegation against him.”

The trial continues.
