Police issue new witness appeal after Sittingbourne bike death

Police have renewed their appeal for videos of a horror crash which led to the death of a 17-year-old father.

They are trying to trace missing vehicles spotted in Tonge Road, Murston, Sittingbourne, on Thursday morning when the teenager was hit by a motorbike

There was a large gathering nearby as mourners were preparing for a funeral.

Sgt Jason Heather of Kent Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said: ‘Police continue to search for the vehicles involved in the collision that were removed from the scene.

"Now we know the full severity of the tragic circumstances, I would encourage those who have any knowledge of the vehicles’ whereabouts to take time to reflect and use this opportunity to come forward and provide us with any information you have to assist the investigation team and the family in understanding exactly what happened."

The crash happened about 10.40am near the junction with Portland Avenue.

The teenager, a pedestrian, sustained serious head injuries and was flown to a London hospital where he later died.

Robert Varrier, 29 from Sittingbourne, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident and has been remanded in custody to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on May 18.

A 21-year-old man from Sittingbourne arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence or insurance was released pending further enquiries.

Police are also investigating reports of a number of people riding motorbikes in a "disruptive and anti-social manner" in the same area on the same day.

Thomas Ripley, 24, of Star Lane, Orpington, has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving without the correct licence and has been remanded to appear at Maidstone Crown Court at a date to be set.

Shane Ripley, 32, of Miller Close, Sittingbourne, faces the same offences and has been bailed to appear at Medway magistrates court on June 16.
