First and Second World War heroes from Borden listed on wooden plaques at village hall

An emotional ceremony was held to commemorate the installation of memorial boards at Borden Village Hall.

The wooden plaques list all the villagers who fought in both world wars.

The service was attended by members of Borden Heritage Group, which instigated the memorial project, as well as parish council members and relatives of those listed.

There was a dedication by Fr John Lewis, followed by Last Post sounded by 12-year-old Ben Aspin.

During the interval, guests looked at displays of memorabilia featuring certificates, medals and a uniform, alongside mementoes like letters and photos.

Visitors were also treated to a talk by Keith Lainton called World War One – It Affected Every Family.

Funding for the boards was raised by public subscription at The Queen’s Jubilee Street Party, and grants from the parish council, Swale Borough Council and Kent County Council.

Parish council member, Mike Baldock, said: “The village hall was absolutely packed for what was a very emotional night.

“The boards are a really important tribute and a lasting reminder, not only of those killed, but those whose lives were never the same again after they’d returned.”
