Drivers were left scratching their heads when a series of short yellow lines were painted around cars outside a Sittingbourne school.

Staff and parents arrived at Lansdowne Primary School, in Gladstone Drive, to find the 4ft long markings.

But they were not left with the restriction-free spaces for long - as workers came back to fill in the gaps several days later.

The work, which was carried out by Swale council engineers on behalf of Kent County Council, was due to be completed between September 30 and October 14 ready for when the Traffic Regulation Order comes into action.

However, due to a cancellation in a neighbouring borough - and an opportunity to "make the most of the favourable weather conditions" - the contractors decided to visit the site early and complete as much of the lining as possible.

But the short notice meant they had not asked people in advance to move their cars.

A spokesman for Swale council said: "We would normally take the opportunity to contact residents to advise them of the work, however due to the short notice, this was not possible."

The contractors returned to the area three days later on Friday night to fill in the gaps.
