Sittingbourne boss Nick Davis was surprised to land new signing Jake Beecroft.

The midfielder is set for a key role when the Ryman League Division 1 South season starts on August 8.

Davis learnt of Beecroft’s availability at Tunbridge Wells but didn’t expect to get a player who has Conference experience with Rushden and Tonbridge.

Davis said: “He played 30-odd games for Rushden in the Conference and had a massive part in one of Tonbridge’s seasons in Conference South.

“You look at his age, 26, and he’s in his peak. Everyone I spoke to said what a class act he is and I liked what I saw of him last season.

“I see him in that No.10 role. He can stick it in the top corner from 25 or 30 yards and can win you a game from anywhere.

“We might have one hell of a player on our hands. I’m surprised we got him – Sittingbourne don’t sign players like him, do they?"

Antonio Gonnella has completed his move to Sittingbourne while fellow midfielder Ollie Bankole is training with Brickies in the hope of securing a return to Woodstock Park. He played in the opening pre-season friendly, a 5-2 win at Crockenhill, on Saturday.

Brickies, who were 5-3 winners over Canterbury on Tuesday, continue their pre-season preparations with a home game against Cray Wanderers on Saturday.
