Gridlocked roads in Broadstairs as motorists queue for bottled water due to Southern Water leak

Motorists have been stuck on clogged up streets "for hours" attempting to access two bottled water stations located just 200 metres apart.

The leak, which has affected customers in Broadstairs, Margate, Ramsgate and Manston, has left hundreds of people without water for the majority of the day.

Footage shared online shows Fairfield Road, Broadstairs congested as motorists attempt to access two bottled water stations set up by Southern Water.

Laura Shackleton, who lives in the area, says that the water company are unable to offer a time on when the repairs will be done.

"We have not had water since 3am, Southern Water cannot even guess an E.T.A [for when repairs will be finished]" said the marketing manager.

"We were not informed that bottled water stations had been set up, it was only announced by by-standers on Twitter.

"The roads are gridlocked. Cars aren't moving, people have been stuck in the cars for hours. This is ridiculous."

Checkpoints at Dane Court Grammar School and Broadstairs Asda have now been set up.

But many have taken aim at the company for setting up the stations 200 metres away from each other.

Local artist Dan Thompson filmed the traffic near the school as residents took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

One ridiculed the firm, saying: "Your company is a bad punchline to a terrible joke that no one wants to hear! The mains outside Asda have burst, and yet you want people to go there for bottles of water."

Another said: "40 minutes to get into or out of my drive due to queueing traffic collecting water from Dane Court School. Unfortunately I am having to turn away work as a self employed taxi driver!"

"That’s not acceptable! You have to give a timeframe. If it’s days, people might be able to go and stay with friends and relatives. Get the CEO on please." argued a third disgruntled resident.

People are being warned to expect the water supply to be impacted for the foreseeable future, with Southern Water confirming that there is no current estimated time of repair.

"We're really sorry for the disruption and we are working on a fix but it may take some time. Unfortunately we can't give an estimated time at this moment," tweeted the firm.

On its website, the water company said: "We now have two bottled water stations open, one at Dane Court Grammar School, CT10 2RT, and one at Asda Broadstairs, CT12 5FJ.

"We're continuing to deliver bottled water to our most vulnerable customers on the Priority Services Register. If you require access to bottled water as a priority you can sign up to our Priority Services Register and we’ll add you to the list of emergency deliveries. Please call us on 0800 027 0800.

The company later released an update on Twitter, saying: "We are deeply sorry for the distress and inconvenience that this incident is causing, and that you’re still without water this evening.

We’ll be working through the night to fix the burst water main and return supply to everyone."

It follows yet more water problems for the county after a burst pipe left Tunbridge Wells residents unable to wash or flush their toilets for the last four days.

Since Thursday around 3,000 people have had water troubles.

The collection point at Dane Court Grammar School will close at 9pm, with the station at Asda closing at 10pm.
