Youth crime commissioner Kerry Boyd to stand for election in Birchington South in Thanet as a Conservative councillor

Kent’s first youth crime commissioner is to stand for election for the Conservatives in Thanet.

Kerry Boyd is featured in the party’s list of candidates being put forward for the election in May.

Today marks the completion of her year-long contract as crime youth commissioner, a role created by the Kent commissioner Ann Barnes.

She will be standing in Birchington South ward.

The role of youth commissioner was intended as a link between teenagers and the police, which involved "educating and deterring young people from committing crime", according to the commissioner's website.

The former Hartsdown Academy student took a gap year from her degree in education studies and business studies to take up the role.

But the job was not without its problems. An investigation was launched after claims she had a relationship with a Conservative county councillor who had acted as a referee.

An active runner and a keen supporter of Chelsea FC, Kerry also enjoys driving, music and was a London 2012 Olympic torchbearer through Sturry.

Last week, we revealed no replacement had yet been planned for the now-vacant Kent youth crime commissioner position.

Thanet North party official Simon Moores said he was delighted that Kerry would be standing.

He said: "She has been a member for two years. I am delighted we have someone who is young, enthusiastic and female.

"She wants to move forward after her role as youth crime commissioner and wants to achieve something for the community.”
