Margate man Kevin Springer jailed for 18 months for sexually assaulting unconscious drunk woman at a party

A half-naked woman woke up in a stranger’s house the morning after the night before in a confused state.

So when a man, Kevin Springer, 54 walked in, she kindly made him a cup of coffee.

But Canterbury Crown Court heard that although she had no recollection of the previous night’s boozy events, Springer had in fact sexually assaulted her while she was passed out.

Prosecutor Brian Stork revealed that the distraught victim only discovered details of the incident after receiving a phone call from another partygoer.

Now Springer, of Lister Road, Margate has been jailed for 18 months after admitted the sexual assault.

The prosecutor said the victim had been drinking cider and vodka and Red Bull and was “obviously extremely drunk”.

Mr Stork said she had no recollection of anything after changing her clothes in her own home and tidying up.

“It came as something of a surprise to her that the next thing she remembers was waking up in the defendant’s front room.

“By that time it was dark and was in the early hours of the morning. She noticed she wasn’t wearing anything below the waist, although she was still wearing her bra and a white T-shirt.

“She then saw a pair of men’s boxer shorts on the floor next to her and was very confused as she didn’t know how she had got to this address and didn’t know what had happened or how she had come to be on the floor of the living room," he added.

Mr Springer said she fell asleep again and woke up hours later when it was daylight and made herself and Springer, who had appeared, a cup of coffee.

The prosecutor said it was only later that other partygoers revealed she had been seen in a drunken state, described by some as “wasted”, “very drunk” and “completely gone”.

During the evening the woman kept spilling her drinks and needed to change her clothes and was given the tshirt and boxer shorts to wear.

Others also revealed that while other people slept nearby, Springer had taken advantage of her drunken state to perform sex acts on her – some of which were later caught on his home CCTV, which had been installed following a break-in.

The distressed victim called her mother who telephoned Springer.

He said: “I am sorry. I am not denying anything but it all got out of hand but I swear I didn’t rape her."

He then added: "But why did she make me a cup of coffee if what I did was so bad?"

The mother said her daughter didn’t know what had happened until she was told, the court heard.

Judge Adele Williams said the victim found the incident totally humiliating and traumatic and had been "left feeling dirty".

After the sentencing, Detective Constable Lynne Short said: "This would have been an awful experience for the victim carried out by a man who tried to demean her in an alcohol-fuelled assault and I commend her courage to come forward and report it.

"Reports of sexual offences will always be taken seriously by officers and I am pleased he is behind bars."
