John Galer, centre, presents Still Waters with a £500 cheque from the Chandlers Community Fund.

A counselling service in Margate was delighted to be given a £500 cheque from the Chandlers Building Supplies’ Community Fund, supported by the Thanet Extra.

As a small non-profit centre, Still Waters has been providing counselling to the community for the past seven years. To ensure that everyone can benefit from the service, fees are kept to minimum and they have a sliding scale so that clients pay what they can afford, depending on their personal circumstances.

Rita Hudson from Still Waters was delighted to receive the donation and said: "This money means so much to Still Waters. I just want to thank everyone for voting, and to Chandlers for this wonderful donation."

Chandlers will be donating £500 every month until the end of the year to a local charity, group or organisation that needs some help and support. The details of three nominations will be printed in the Thanet Extra each month for the readers to decide who will receive the donation.

This month’s nominations

The Windmill Allotment Project was developed from six derelict allotments into a thriving community allotment project by volunteers, community service and local schools. It promotes access to organic, locally grown produce; to encourage healthy eating and provide a beautiful space where a sense of community prevails. The donation would help buy tools, seeds, extra ingredients and refreshments, and help provide support and advice.

Thanet Community Support Partnership is managed by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau. It is made up of a coalition of organisations which work together to help support the elderly, isolated, disabled and vulnerable community in Thanet by recruiting volunteers as befrienders. This can mean just sitting and having a cup of tea and a chat, doing some shopping or helping with gardening. A donation of £500 would help them to hold regular informal meetings for their volunteers.

The Grotto Hill Area Street Scheme covers 10 streets with more than 300 residents and started in 2002. The aim of the group is to promote a clean and safe area for residents to live and bring back an old-fashioned sense of community spirit. Previous projects have included transforming a space used for tipping into an area of tarmac. The Community Fund donation would be used for a well-being initiative for the area’s older residents.

To place your vote simply email chandlersthanet@pmwcom.co.uk with the name of the project you want to win in the subject box, or alternatively call Sally Bason on 01403 783400. Voting ends on Tuesday, November 2, and only one vote per person will be counted.
