Organisers behind Quex Park Bonfire & Fireworks in Birchington-on-Sea say show must go on amid weather warning

The new organisers of one of Kent's biggest fireworks displays say "the show must go on" as wet weather threatens to dampen celebrations across the county.

The Cain brothers - whose family run amusement arcades in Herne Bay, Sheppey and Margate - have taken on the popular Quex Park event in Birchington-on-Sea.

A yellow weather warning from the Met Office for tomorrow has led to displays being cancelled elsewhere, but siblings Tom, Bill and David are committed to putting on a show to remember.

Tom, who has been planning tomorrow's event for a year, says they are “holding strong”.

“The fireworks are very much taking place - the show must go on,” he said.

“We’ve spent a lot of time recently looking into the weather.

“As soon as we knew that it was possibly not going to be 100% we looked into all the safety procedures that we may have to put into place.

“We’re not people to do things incorrectly, and we’re going to make sure it is a safe event.

“We won’t open it if it’s not safe, but we know what the weather has given us and we know what could possibly come our way. But we also know how we’re going to solve any problems or any weather conditions that may occur on the day.

“I’m very much looking forward to it. I thrive off people’s enjoyment and people’s happiness so I'm just looking forward to, all being well, and putting a smile on people’s faces.”

While Quex Park’s annual fireworks display has been running for more than 15 years, this is the first year the event is being organised by the Cain brothers.

Tickets for the light show cost £15 at www.quexparkfireworks.co.uk.

One of the safety measures that has been put in place in response to the inclement weather is a change to the advertised opening time, with the ticket gates now opening an hour later at 4pm, and the car park at 3pm.

In a social media post, the organisers reassured attendees that: “Despite this minor adjustment, you can still look forward to thrilling entertainment, a colossal bonfire, mouth-watering food, and, of course, the dazzling fireworks display that's the highlight of the evening.

“Keep an eye on our social media channels and website for any additional updates.

“We're committed to ensuring you have a safe and happy time at Quex Park Bonfire and Fireworks.”
