Ms McFarling, who was 54 and from Broadstairs, was declared dead at the scene of the crash at the junction of Montefiore Avenue and Dumpton Park Drive.

Brownlie was subsequently charged with causing death by careless driving, which he denied when he appeared at Canterbury Crown Court today (April 15).

The 44-year-old was told by Judge Simon James that his trial will start on March 17 next year.

Brownlie, of Botany Road, Broadstairs, was released on bail until a pre-trial review hearing on July 5 this year.

In tributes paid to Ms McFarling at the time of the fatal collision she was described as someone who "spread love and light wherever she went".

Husband Don Gray said the keen cyclist, runner and swimmer "had a huge capacity for fun and laughter, and took life head on", while colleagues at Kent Council Council where she worked as a social worker with deaf adults, described her as a "much-loved and valued".

Craig Mackinlay, MP for South Thanet, described Ms McFarling's death as an "absolute tragedy" and wrote on the X social media platform: "My thoughts go to family and friends - do get in contact if you need any assistance and support at this dreadful time."
