Plans submitted for 118 flats on River Centre car park in Tonbridge

Developers are making a third bid to build a block of flats on a former town centre car park.

River Centre Developments is after planning permission to transform the plot in Tonbridge.

The latest application seeks to build 118 flats in blocks of staggered height from seven to nine storeys.

Each would have a balcony and access to a roof garden.

However, residents would be expected to make the most of the location at the former River Centre car park off Medway Wharf Road, which lies only 350m from the High Street, and walk or cycle to work.

The developer plans to provide 118 cycle stands, but only 37 parking spaces.

The accommodation would be split between 76 market properties and 42 affordable homes, but most units would be studio or one-bedroom properties.

There have been two other attempts to develop the site from other developers. Both were refused by Tonbridge and Malling council.

A scheme put forward in 2018 envisaged 252 homes, then another in 2020 proposed 183 flats across 13 storeys.

The site lies in a zone 3 flood risk area.

Tonbridge and Malling council recently granted planning permission for 144 flats to be built on the former gasworks site, which lies nearby.
