The death is not being treated as suspicious.
A cordon has been set up and forensic investigators are also at the scene.
A police spokesman said: "Officers have cordoned the area to investigate what happened."
The South East Coast Ambulance Service also received a call at 7.30am.
After receiving a report that a man had been found unconscious, with no pulse and not breathing, it sent one car and an ambulance paramedic to the scene.
They were joined at the scene by a community first responder but were unable to help the deceased and pronounced him dead.
The alleyway is surrounded by shops and other local businesses and the discovery left staff shocked and confused when they turned up for work.

A worker from the Hospice in the Weald charity store said: "When I walked my dog past at about half past eight there was a lot of police there. A bit later forensics turned up.
"I don't know anymore than that, I can't see anything from the shop."
