Special Constables from Kent Police dispatched to tackle antisocial behaviour in Tunbridge Wells

Volunteers from the Special Constabulary have taken part in a night time operation to tackle antisocial behaviour.

On Saturday nine special constables assisted regular police officers in tackling issues across Tunbridge Wells.

Special Constables are volunteers who have full police powers, equipment and uniform and who work alongside regular officers at Kent Police. They give up a minimum of 16 hours of their own time every month, to help police an area of their choice.

In Tunbridge Wells, special constables responded to a number of incidents during the evening. They attended a disturbance at a property in Kibbles Lane, Southborough, where a 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with threatening behaviour and criminal damage.

Patrols also attended The Grove park following concerns raised around alcohol and antisocial behaviour, where it was reported as many as 50 people had gathered. The special constables involved made a number of alcohol seizures in which underage people were identified and ensured everyone left the area safely.

As well as dealing with further incidents of antisocial behaviour, specials also helped deal with a reported burglary in progress in Tunbridge Wells High Street and responded to concerns raised over nuisance drivers at North Farm Industrial Estate.

District Commander for Tunbridge Wells, Chief Inspector Pete Steenhuis said: "Through the support of people who volunteer their time, the Special Constabulary allows us to put in place additional patrols to supplement our normal day-to-day resources.

"These volunteers help us to proactively target and respond to local issues, such as concerns around the misuse of drugs and alcohol, or offences such as speeding, theft or burglary.

"Special constables perform the full role of their regular counterparts and provide a valuable contribution to the policing of Kent’s communities.

"The nine additional officers on patrol last weekend all made a valuable contribution to keeping Tunbridge Wells a safe place to live and socialise."
