He was last seen next to a takeaway restaurant near the station.

The emergency services were sent out searching the Marden area as concerns were raised for the man's welfare amid the "extreme circumstances".

Inspector Suzy McDonnell said: "He may have sought to avoid [the flooding] by walking along footpaths or across fields."

An update issued this morning confirmed he has now been found safe.

Inspector McDonnell has since thanked water rescue crews from Kent Search and Rescue, firefighters, police officers and helicopter teams, paramedics, South East 4x4 response and the coastguard for their help.

In a tweet she said: "Thank you all so much for all your relentless effort in finding our MP in such extreme circumstances."

Three members were out on site for around two and a half hours with more on standby if needed.

Yesterday, heavy rain caused areas across Kent to flood with roads being described "like rivers" by residents and caused travel chaos.

A yellow weather alert was in place yesterday morning which was followed by a second warning for thunderstorms which was in place until 6am today.
