How would you prepare for the imminent arrival of 130 ships carrying 26,000 troops planning to overthrow you?

You can find out how Elizabethans coped with the threat of the Spanish Armada this weekend when Penshurst Place holds its annual Elizabeth I and the Armada event.

The estate travels back to the Tudor era of 1588 to show how the household readied itself for invasion, giving visitors the chance to experience firsthand the notable period in history.

After turbulent relations between Elizabeth I and Philip II of Spain, a fleet of 130 ships threatened British shores, but were ultimately unsuccessful. The victory boosted the queen’s popularity and she went on to reign for another 15 years.

Visitors can wander through the house and gardens to meet Queen Elizabeth I and staff preparing for battle.

The educational weekend features costumed actors telling the story of how they lived, what they ate and how the militia protected the house.

Children can even join pikemen in defending Penshurst from invasion.

Elizabeth I and the Armada will be at Penshurst Place on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19 between noon and 4pm both days.
