Mamma Mia! the musical is coming to the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

Smash hit musical Mamma Mia! is stopping off in Kent as part of its UK tour - and how can we resist it?

The sellout show, which is currently celebrating 22 years since its West End debut, will be at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury for a whopping 11 nights.

“I’m really excited that we are taking Mamma Mia! on tour around the UK once again,” says producer Judy Craymer, who created the musical phenomenon in the ‘90s.

“We look forward to welcoming new audiences, as well as those that have seen it before”.

Since its debut, Mamma Mia! has been seen by more than 65 million people in 50 productions around the world.

For the few remaining who haven’t seen the show, the comedy musical is set on a Greek island paradise where Sophie is getting ready for her wedding day along with her mother, Donna, and their friends.

However, Donna has no idea that Sophie’s quest to find her father ahead of the wedding will lead three men from her past to their doorstep just moments before Sophie is set to walk down the aisle.

The laugh-out-loud story of love, friendship and identity is set to the hits of global superstars Abba.

“I was fascinated that Björn had written these lyrics,” says Judy. “They meant so much, and they were about strong women. They take you on a journey. And that was the beginning of me falling in love with those songs.

“They spoke to me as theatre songs. You’d be lucky to have two like that in a musical, let alone 20. So I started thinking about how to turn them into a narrative.”

Fans can expect to hear the best of Abba’s back catalogue with a soundtrack including Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Waterloo, the Winner Takes it All and, of course, Mamma Mia.

After a slow start in London, Judy’s story and Abba’s music eventually came together to create a much-loved show which, in turn, became a box office success.

Mamma Mia! was released as a film starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Julie Walters in 2008 and became the highest grossing film of the year.

The sequel, Mamma Mia Here We Go Again, was released in 2018, with names such as Lily James and Cher joining most of the original cast.

With more than two decades of sellout shows and two blockbuster films under its belt, it’s hardly surprising that there are only a few tickets left for the UK tour, so make sure you don’t miss out.
