Road repairs throw up a new problem

By Hayley Robinson

Repairs to a collapsed sewer in Sittingbourne are expected to be completed by Monday.

But motorists who have been caught up in the tailbacks while the works were carried out in Dover Street and West Street are being warned not to breathe a sigh of relief just yet.

During the repairs Clancy Docwra – which is carrying out the work on behalf of Southern Water – identified sewer damage along the diversion route of Avenue of Remembrance at the junction with Albany Road.

Southern Water is now in negotiations with Kent County Council’s Highways department to carry out the repairs as soon as the work in Dover Street/West Street is completed.

One lane of Dover Street and West Street was reopened with restricted access earlier last week and three-way traffic lights are operating from Park Road to West Street, from Dover Street to High Street and Park Road and from Dover Street to West Street. HGVs have also been barred from accessing the Station Road roundabout.

The road remains open at Albany Road and Avenue of Remembrance.

A spokesman for the water firm said: "Businesses and councillors are being kept informed of the situation. Work at this location is expected to complete as scheduled, by February 8.

"Southern Water would like to thank businesses and residents for their patience. We would also like to thank the highways staff and police for their support."
