My favourite part of Christmas has always been the food.
So when I was told about a new Yorkshire Pudding Wraps stall at Ashford Designer Outlet, I took the opportunity to start the festivities early on my lunch break this week.
As I approached the site, which resides just in front of Nando’s, an aroma of succulent roast dinner filled the air, setting the stage for what promised to be a memorable lunch.
I did not arrive at the Outlet until just after 2.30pm, so I had just missed the lunchtime rush. Unsurprisingly, I was the only person in line.
I browsed the menu and opted for the Yorkshire pudding wrap which included a choice of pork, turkey or beef and was topped with stuffing, mixed veg, and gravy.
In order to stay with the festive spirit, I went for the turkey as my choice of meat.
The food was served to me within a matter of minutes and I tried to find the nearest seating area to go and tuck in – but this was not an easy task.
In 2019, the shopping centre went through a £90m extension in which its large food court – previously home to McDonald’s and Spudulike, among others – was flattened.
Although sit-in options are still available, the mall now features more food stalls that serve coffee, hot dogs and churros, meaning seats aren’t always easy to find.
However, I eventually claimed a spot and was eager to dig into the festive wrap.
The combination of succulent roast dinner ingredients wrapped in a Yorkshire pudding blanket is a flavourful journey that undoubtedly tickles the taste buds.
The marriage of traditional Christmas flavours, from perfectly cooked roast meat to savoury stuffing, created a satisfying and comforting experience – something that was needed on a wet and windy day in Ashford.
However, the same could not be said for the visual appeal. The wrap fell short in the aesthetics department, presenting a rather uninspiring and messy appearance.
The snack cost £9 and I would be lying if I said I did not expect a more visually appealing presentation that mirrors the festive spirit.
While the quality of the ingredients justifies a certain premium, a £9 tag feels a tad steep for what is essentially a wrap.
The taste is commendable, but the overall value for money might deter some potential customers, especially when considering the unimpressive presentation.
So, if you're seeking both a feast for the eyes and the palate, you might want to explore other options.
Overall, I’d give the snack 3.5 stars out of five. While it was messy and underwhelmingly presented, I could not fault the taste.
When you are doing your Christmas shopping at the Outlet over the next two weekends, I’d say there are not many better options on offer for a quick and tasty bite.
